“The griffin looks like a combination of a ferocious cat and a giant bird. It usually inhabits primeval highlands and builds its nests on unreachable mountain summits. The griffin preys on large mammals and, being a highly territorial creature, fiercely defends its hunting grounds.”
-The Witcher 3: Bestiary

The Beast of White Orchard
As you first arrive in White Orchard you come across a trade wagon knocked over on its side in the road. On the other side of that wagon, is a giant beast they call the Beast of White Orchard. A Griffin, and a large one at that. Upon sight the griffin fleas, carrying the corpse of the merchants dead horse in its giant talons. As the quote states above, Griffins are hybrids; Beats of two, and in this case, an Eagle and a Lion makes a very dangerous combination.
Later you learn this beast is old, but it is new to the area. Driven Inland by the stench of war, and the passion to feast on the dead, Griffins do not usually make there way into the open fields east of the Pontar. This is something Geralt, the main protagonist of the game realizes when he takes the contract to kill the Griffin. Knowing whats in store, he begins preparing for a fight not to take lightly.
Due to the Griffin’s intense speed and aerial mobility, you are given the Crossbow at the start of this fight, and pivotal weapon that introduces a much used mechanic in the game.
The Beast of White Orchard is also the first Witcher Contract you receive in the game. Rewarding you with 300 gold upon bringing its head to the sergeant.
